Mellisa's Hot About Horchatas!

¡Hola!

¡Soy Mellisa! If there’s one thing you want to know about me, I absolutely LOVE horchatas. But what are horchatas, you ask? Uhm… they are like… Horchatas are like those specialized frappes you get at the coffee shop. They’re just as sweet, if not a little sweeter.

To be literal, I like to describe them as a traditional Mexican drink made up of white rice soaked in water. Then, with a little sprinkle of cinnamon, you got yourself something that’s Spicy Sweet! There’s one thing you gotta remember. As Granny Jojo once said, “There’s an important balance in life. Just as there’s an important balance when mixing creamy rice, vanilla, and cinnamon.”

Making horchatas is easy! All you gotta do is follow these 4 easy steps.

  1. Blend the rice, water, and cinnamon sticks all together until they’re all nice and ground.

  2. Add water from a large pitcher or container (Let it sit overnight to thicken)

  3. Using a good strainer, mesh and mix the rice mixture into a pitcher and throw away the rice. (Or don’t, use it for porridge!)

  4. Finally, you stir it all together, along with some milk and sugar, let sit in the fridge and chill.

FINAL THOUGHTS

When you’re all done, give yourself a high-five and your favorite snack, and presto! You’ve made yourself some tasty horchatas. Ooh, do you want to have some together?
