Toyetic Trouble

They're making a Toy Story 5?

Yeah, buddy. They're making a TOY STORY 5.

You serious, my space ranger?

You know how much I love the Toy Story franchise and all. But I'm not sure how to really feel about a 5th mainline film. If you remember from my Buzz Lightyear Appreciation Post, I mentioned my... reserved feelings... about both Toy Story 4 and the LIGHTYEAR spin-off film. Add that with PIXAR's NEW-AGE track record recently (circa 2018), and its safe to say that my feelings about a fifth film aren't as enthusiastic as I would hope. Especially given the fact that both Woody and Buzz are going to be returning again for this one.

Now, on one hand, PIXAR still does make original films. Problem is that they aren't as encapsulating as they once were. I dunno if that's just because of me getting older and preferring more in my films (animated or live-action), or its legitamely their new way of telling stories that just don't click with me. Elemental was alright, but it ain't setting the world on fire or washing its audience to tears like before. Something isn't working, and it concerns me when these new teams (even ones with old members) start handling old properties like Toy Story. Then again... I could always just skip these films right? I don't need to watch them.

But I am a cautiously optimistic cartoonist and an Avid Toy Story Enjoyer. I'm of the belief that Toy Story 3 was the perfect ending (like most of you. Some of you maybe even consider the first or second films to be the end of it), but we've already ripped the bandaid and made a 4th entry. Just like Ice Age, we're long past the expiration date, and are only doing more just to make extra money. Except instead of a set of comedies, Toy Story also has that distinction of "That sad movie series about toys and growing up" ever since 2 and 3. People can be sad about toys for so long before it gets kinda silly now that you think about it...

What will Toy Story 5 bring to the table? Who knows. I hear some theories/rumors that could be a cool idea, but I'm not sure they sound good enough as a movie. Personally, I'd rather Woody come to his senses and go back to his friends, but with how TS4 and most other long-running franchises like to throw out canon (and canon logic) for emotional impact... I don't have much hope for that. I WILL, however, look out for what comes next. I love these characters (especially you, Buzz. Please, I hope they write you better this time...), and much like Andy, they mean a lot to me.

If I had the keys, I'd do a few things with Toy Story's future:

  • De-canonize 4 + LIGHTYEAR (OK, that's a selfish fever dream. But hey, hahaha!)

  • Put the Buzz Lightyear of Star Command TV show on Disney Plus. (We are going to be 6 "Toy Story" films in, and they still keep denying us this show.)

  • It's called TOY STORY. So why don't we have a new trilogy following a new set of toys? Woody, Buzz, and many of the older characters could still appear, but I would like to have fresh new lights placed on them. I'd love to see the story of Rocky Gibraltar or Sid's Mutant Toys and what they've been doing since their encounters with the cowboy and space ranger. Heck, Buzz Lightyear is still a popular toy in-universe, so we could have a different Buzz Lightyear with a new personality. Heck, maybe even do what STAR WARS did with the Clone Troopers and give them voice actors that weren't Temura Morrison.

I honestly would rather have PIXAR do something stupid yet fun like they did with CARS 2 back in 2011. I had a lot of fun with that film, and that's even after learning about how hated that film is! Then again, who takes CARS seriously? Toy Story and the other PIXAR films (except Good Dinosaur and Onward) are ones that most agree are their hard-hitting emotional properties. I want to see how Toy Story 5 turns out. Will they repeat a storyline like Incredibles 2 and Finding Dory did? Will they bring back age-old characters for a major story that impacts the franchise harder than the endings of Toy Story 3 or TS4? There's a lot to answer, and that's if they make a story that actually WORKS...

It's either this, or we suffer another long line of LIVE-ACTION REMAKES to Disney's entire animation library (including PIXAR one day). I mean how desperate are you that you need to see a real-life version of the Disney version of a fairytale. You know they're already going to do their more ORIGINAL films too, and I don't think anyone can make excuses for that like they can do for the fairytale movies.

Oh yeah, did you hear? They're also making an INSIDE OUT 2. Because that film really deserved a sequel, right?

In fact, I will even update my BUZZ LIGHTYEAR COMMEMORATION post when I see TS5. That's a promise! Maybe it'll be good. I'll still watch it. But boy, sometimes we deserve better...

Welp. As the saying goes...

GOTTA GROO-! Eh?! Wait, hold on.

TO CARTOONING... AND BEYOND!!!
